Spring Melt Advisory for Northern Sunrise County Residents

As temperatures begin to rise, Northern Sunrise County is advising residents that this year’s above average snowfall has the potential to increase spring runoff, which may lead to localized flooding and pooling water in the coming weeks. While these conditions are a normal part of the seasonal melt, the higher snow accumulation means that water levels could rise more quickly than in typical years, creating additional challenges for property owners, road users, and rural landowners.

The County is actively monitoring weather patterns, snowpack conditions, water levels, and drainage infrastructure across the County and Hamlets. Our Public Works department has equipment clearing culverts, opening up drainage lines and inspecting known trouble spots to ensure we are ready to respond quickly if conditions change.

What Residents Can Expect:

  • Increased runoff as snow melts rapidly during warm days
  • Temporary pooling of water in low lying areas
  • Soft or muddy gravel road conditions
  • Potential flooding in areas with limited drainage

How You Can Prepare:

  • Clear snow away from building foundations
  • Monitor your basement sump pumps and drainage systems
  • Clear snow and debris away from culverts, ditches, and drainage paths on your property if required
  • Report significant flooding, blocked culverts, or hazardous road conditions to the County

Northern Sunrise County will continue to share updates as conditions evolve. The safety of our residents, the protection of property, and the maintenance of safe roadways remain our top priorities. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation and preparedness during the spring melt period.

County crews will address areas of concern as efficiently as possible; however, response times may vary if higher priority issues arise. Urgent concerns such as washed out or frozen culverts, flooding, or significant road damage that could affect safety should be reported immediately by calling 780-624-0013 or by submitting a service request on our website at www.northernsunrise.net. If after hours, please call 587-748-0616.
