March 11 Council Highlights

March 11, 2025 Council Meeting

 

News:

At the regular Council meeting held on March 11, 2025, Administration was directed to:

  • Send a letter of support for Birch Hills County's application for the Regional Surface Water Drainage Committee Alberta Community Partnership grant.
  • Send a letter to Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors to advise them that Northern Sunrise County would like to partner with them for the paving of the portion of gravel on Highway 744 at the top of Judah Hill.
  • Send a letter to Premier Smith and the Minister of Alberta Forestry and Parks advocating the importance of Mercer Peace River's operations in the region.
  • Send a letter to MLA Dan Williams requesting support in engaging Invest in Alberta for a comprehensive tour of the Region that will allocate sufficient time for all municipalities involved. The letter will be shared with the municipalities involved, encouraging them to reach out to their MLA in support of this initiative.

 

Chief Isaac Laboucan-Avirom, Councillors George Merrier, Frank Whitehead, Kindy Kramer, Director of Executive Services and Jenna Strachan, Director of Lands and Consultation of the Woodland Cree First Nation #474 had a discussion regarding opportunities for tourism collaboration.

 

Council nominated the Peace River Municipal Library for the 2025 Public Library Excellence Award.

 

Bylaws:

  • Council gave third reading to and passed Bylaw B468/25 Revised Youth Council Advisory Committee, as presented.

 

Presentations:

  • Derek Young, Regional Director and Mae Stewart, Operations Manager with Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridor – Peace Region provided an update of their operations.
  • Shane Koss, Director, Stakeholder Relations, Jason Augustin, Production & Facilities Engineering Manager, John Hickley, Peace River Superintendent, Travis Knutson, Manager Geosciences, Heavy Oil, Tyler Kushniruk, Sr. Development Engineer, Chris Leroux, Production Operations Manager, Breanne Macleod, Surface Land and Nancy Nguyen, Geologist with Baytex Energy provided an update on the operations on their Cadotte-West project.
  • Lee Rueb, Woodlands Manager, Marissa Green, GIS and Land Use Coordinator, and Cal Daken Director, Innovation and Woodlands with Mercer Peace River provided an update on their operations.

 

Donations and Sponsorships:

  • $100 silent auction item for the Alberta Provincial Rural Crime Watch Symposium on March 14-15, 2025 in Edmonton, AB.

 

Upcoming Council Meetings:

  • March 25 & April 8, 2025 regular Council Meetings at 9:30 a.m. in the Northern Sunrise County Council Chamber.
  • March 25, 2025 Public Hearing for Plan 0720558 Block 2 Lot 19MR land at 10:30 a.m.
  • April 8, 2025 Public Hearing for the Land Use Bylaw B458/24 at 10:00 a.m.
