Need Help Finding Volunteers?
Volunteers are pillars to nonprofits. From assistance while running events to lending a helping hand in marketing campaigns, they do it all.
The following are links that will provide information on retaining and attracting volunteers to support your non-profit.
Volunteer Alberta- For Organizations: Our goal is to help strengthen nonprofit organizations of all sizes, from all sub-sectors, and in all communities throughout Alberta. We provide access to relevant resources, programs, and services that address the needs of the sector and support volunteerism and civic engagement.
Volunteer Alberta- For Volunteers: We believe volunteerism and civic engagement are crucial for health and well-being. Vibrant communities require people in business, government, community, and nonprofit organizations working together to transform our lives and the lives of others through active participation.
Attracting volunteers can be challenging. Here are some strategies from Administration’s and committee’s past experiences that may help:
- Clearly define your mission and purpose: make sure your organization’s mission and purpose are clear and concise. Volunteers are more likely to be attracted to an organization that has a clear mission and purpose that they can easily understand and support.
- Build a strong online presence: In today’s digital age, having a strong online presence is crucial to attracting volunteers. Make sure your organization has an up-to-date website and social media pages that are regularly updated with engaging content. Offering a variety of volunteer opportunities can help attract a broader range of commitment for each opportunity. Have a list of duties for each volunteer group. People donating their time do not like disorganization or standing around not knowing what to do.
- Event procedure book: This can be the ideal tool that lists all duties and tasks from start to finish of an event. This will help designate and organize volunteers and help with the succession of lead organizers.
- Provide training and support: Volunteers want to feel like they are making a difference and contributing to the organization's mission. Provide training and support to help them be successful in their roles and feel valued.
- Recognize and appreciate volunteers: Make sure to recognize and appreciate your volunteers for their time and efforts. Show them that their contributions are valued and that they are making a difference in the organization and in their community. This can be as simple as a thank-you card, note or a shout-out on social media.
- Partner with local organizations: Partnering with local organizations and businesses can help you reach a wider audience and attract more volunteers. These partnerships can also provide opportunities for collaboration and shared resources.
- Offer incentives: Consider offering incentives such as free merchandise or discounted event tickets to volunteers who have shown dedication and commitment to the organization. This can help incentivize current volunteers to stay involved and attract new volunteers who are interested in the rewards. Incentives can also vary from perks to social benefits. Depending on the resources available, volunteering can also be a social activity that allows people to connect with others who share their interest and values. Share these connection stories on social media, as this will also help recruit new volunteers that want to feel connected to their communities.
