Cancellation of Mandatory Evacuation Lubicon Lake Band #453

At 08:00 hours on July 12, 2023 the mandatory evacuation notice was lifted for the residents of Little Buffalo.  Displaced residents may now return home.

The following information has been provided to the County by Lubicon Lake Band representatives:

  • Residents are asked to please follow the directions of the local authorities and please let your community leads know of your departure from your hotel.
  • Please check in at local check points on your arrival into the community and to pick up a re-entry safe package which included the safely returning home information.
  • Please be cautious of the Wildland Firefighters in the area.

Little Buffalo Wildfire Update

Wildfire PWF-074

Forestry continues to provide multiple resources to the fire close to the hamlet of Little Buffalo and focus continues on containment. Chief and Council of the Lubicon Lake Band #453, have advised that the evacuation order will remain in place at this time.

Little Buffalo Evacuation Order

Wildfire PWF-074

Lubicon Lake Band #453 and Kee Tas Kee Now Tribal Council have issued a mandatory evacuation order for the Hamlet of Little Buffalo. Please follow their social media postings (KTC Emergency Services on Facebook is a good resource) and AEA alerts for further information and updates. Note: Highway 986 may not be accessible into Little Buffalo; follow 511 Alberta for road closure updates.

As additional information is available, Northern Sunrise County will continue to provide updates.

Wildfire PWF-074
Forestry continues to use extensive resources on PWF-074. It has grown in size to approximately 40 ha but has been held back from Highway 986 by the resources. Highway 986 may have limited visibility due to smoke. There will also be aircraft responding to the fire. Please use extreme caution if you need to travel in the area. The hamlet of Little Buffalo still remains on a one-hour evacuation alert.

Action to take:

  • If you are in the affected area, you must prepare for a possible evacuation within a one hour notice.
  • Fuel your vehicles and gather pets, important documents, medications and enough food and water to be away from your home for at least 7 days
  • No evacuation is required at this time

Wildfire SWF-068
This fire has seen increased activity this afternoon with the warm temperatures and winds and is moving
east/northeast. A Baytex industrial site has been evacuated as a safety precaution. No homes are in
any danger with this increased activity. Visibility in the area may be limited due to smoke. Please use
extreme caution if you need to travel in this region.

For Immediate Release – June 30, 2023 at 14:15 Hours

Northern Sunrise County is issuing an evacuation alert for the Hamlet of Little Buffalo.  Wildfire PWF-074 is burning 3 kilometres north of the Hamlet of Little Buffalo. The situation is being carefully monitored and if conditions do not improve an evacuation will be required.  The County will be coordinating with the Kee Tas Kee Now (KTC) Tribal Council Emergency Services during this event.

Action to take:

  • If you are in the affected area, you must prepare for a possible evacuation within a one hour notice.
