February 27, 2024 Council Meeting Highlights

News:

At the regular Council meeting held on February 27, 2024, Administration was directed to:

  • Send a letter of congratulations to the St. Isidore Carnaval Organizing Committee for their efforts in organizing this year’s Carnaval held on February 16-18, 2024. 
  • Send a letter to the Peace Regional Waste Management Company regarding the County’s concerns of the hours of operation for the Little Buffalo Transfer Station. 
  • Send the letter to the Premier, Alberta Minister of Justice, and the RCMP regarding the utilization of County funds given to the RCMP through the Police Funding Model as presented. 
  • Send a letter to the Federal Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities emphasizing the critical need for federal funding to support large-scale road projects in the North to ensure the continuation of regional connectivity and resource development and have the letter include a request for Federal support in the development of utility services within the right of way along the Highway 686 Corridor. 

Council appointed:

  • Fire Chief, David LeBlanc and Deputy Fire Chief, Julien Bergeron as Fire Guardians for Northern Sunrise County, who shall exercise the powers and duties of Fire Guardian as set out in the Forest and Prairie Protection Act to the best of their ability, for a period of one year, from April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025.
  • Councillor Javos to the Rural Municipalities of Alberta (RMA) District Four Drainage Ditches Ad-Hoc Committee.
  • Reeve Williams to the Mighty Peace Watershed Alliance as a representative for the RMA District Four Committee.

Bylaws:

  • Council gave first and second reading to Bylaw B438/23 Economic and Tourism Development as amended. Third reading will be requested at the March 12, 2024 regular Council meeting.

Policies:

  • Council approved Policy 4.7 Health and Safety as presented.

Presentations:

  • Channing MacDonald from the Peace River Municipal Library & Art Gallery provided a 2023 overview of library operations which included key highlights and an event proposal.

Donations and Sponsorships:

  • $1,000 to the North West Skills Canada Association for the North West Regional Skills Canada Competition on April 18-19, 2024 in Fairview, AB.
  • $700 to the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) Peace River Branch for the 2024 APEGA Science Olympics Event on April 27, 2024 in Fairview, AB.

Upcoming Council Meetings:

  • March 12 & 26, 2024, regular Council Meetings at 9:30 a.m. in the Northern Sunrise County Council Chamber.
  • Public Hearing March 12, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. for Bylaw B440/24 for the purpose of amending the Land Use Bylaw to create a Mixed Density Rural Residential District.
