News:

At the regular Council meeting held on February 13, 2024, Administration was directed to:

  • Send a letter of support for the Maskwa Medical Center to the Alberta Minister of Health, requesting the Province to continue actively participating in ongoing discussions with the Maskwa Medical Center Board.
  • Send a letter to the Provincial government to request financial support for the Peace River Regional Airport operations for the utilization of the airport for critical services such as Medical Evacuation and Forestry Operations.
  • Send a letter of support to Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors regarding the closure of the road plans in Little Buffalo within the reserve boundary, except for the road access to Plan 8121430; Block 1; Lot 7.
  • Request a meeting with the Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors during the Rural Municipalities of Alberta Spring Convention on March 18-20, 2024 in Edmonton, AB to discuss the following items:
    • Peace River Regional Airport Funding
    • Highway 744 overlay and paving of realignment section at the top of Judah Hill
    • Update on Highway 686 Corridor regarding the timeline and the inclusion of utility services in the right of way
    • Winter maintenance for Highway 986

Council proclaimed March 2024, as Multiple Myeloma Awareness Month in Northern Sunrise County and directed Administration to send a letter to the Minister of Health requesting for continued support in declaring March as Myeloma Awareness Month.

Bylaws:

  • Council gave first reading to Bylaw B443/24 Lending Bylaw for the Peace River Regional Women’s Shelter Society for the purpose of emergent renovations to the shelter as presented. Second and Third Reading will be requested at the March 12, 2024 Council meeting.
  • Council gave first reading to Bylaw B440/24 for the purpose of amending the Land Use Bylaw B275/15 for the creation of a Mixed Density Rural Residential District. A Public Hearing is scheduled for March 12, 2024. See below for more information.
  • Council gave third reading to and passed Bylaw B435/23 to amend Sunrise Gateway Business Park Area Structure Plan Bylaw 189/11 to identify the current road networks, districts, bylaws numbers, and acronyms as amended.

Presentations:

  • William Stewart, Airport Manager for the Peace River Regional Airport Association Ltd, provided an update on their operations. 
  • Ken Drysdale and Charles Longmate with the Maskwa Medical Center Board provided an overview of the Maskwa Medical Center project.

Upcoming Council Meetings:

  • February 27 and March 12, 2024, regular Council Meetings at 9:30 a.m. in the Northern Sunrise County Council Chamber.
  • Public Hearing March 12, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. for Bylaw B440/24 for the purpose of amending the Land Use Bylaw to create a Mixed Density Rural Residential District.
