Northern Sunrise County Council Approves 2024 Budget and Tax Rate Bylaw

On April 9, 2024, Northern Sunrise County Council approved the final capital and operations budgets for 2024. The $29,088,804 budget includes an estimated $21,756,804 for general operations, $1,241,281 for debt payments and $6,090,719 for capital investments.

Council approved the 2024 tax rate bylaw on April 23, 2024, with a decrease in residential property tax. Due to the changing economic climate and inflationary pressures on municipal budgets most municipalities in Alberta are seeing increases in their property tax rates for 2024. While cost-of-living increases continue to be challenging for residents in our province, Council made a motion to decrease the residential tax rate by $1, bringing the tax rate down to $3 per $1,000 of assessed property value. Residential property owners, for properties assessed at the same value as in 2023, will see a decrease of 25% on the municipal portion of the taxes.

“Council passed the 2024 operating and capital budgets while continuing to contend with provincial downloading and reduced provincial funding.  We continue to advocate to the province on this and other areas of concern to the County and region.  Even though we have concerns over the decreased funding being provided now, and in the future, Council continues to prioritize the well-being of its residents by lowering the residential mill rate once again. This decision not only eases the financial burden on current residents but also enhances the attractiveness of the County to potential newcomers.”

Council and Administration have developed a balanced budget that invests in critical projects and essential programs and is thankful that our strategic decision-making allows us to continue providing some relief to County taxpayers. Once again, the budget maintains service levels and continues to place the County in a stable financial position.

A few of the projects Council approved for 2024 include:

  • Recreation – Pump Track
  • Update Trail Signage
  • Annual Gravel Haul – Marie Reine & Judah
  • Local Road & Bridge Maintenance
  • Fleet and Equipment Replacement
  • Annual Drainage program
  • Utilities Upgrades
