Northern Sunrise County Council Approves 2021 Budget and Tax Rate Bylaw

On April 13, 2021, Northern Sunrise County Council approved the 2021 to 2023 operations budget and the 2021 to 2025 capital budget. On April 27, 2021 Council approved the 2021 tax rate bylaw. Due to ongoing sound planning and fiscal management by Council and Administration, the County has been able to maintain the same mill rate for our residential, farmland and industrial properties for another year.

The downturn in Alberta’s economy and the current Pandemic have affected everyone’s lives. In an effort to mitigate the strain on our ratepayers, Council directed Administration to provide the following tax discounts to County ratepayers for the 2021 Tax Notice Year:

  • A 5% discount for residential and farm accounts, a 3% discount for commercial accounts, and a 2% discount for designated industrial and linear accounts, on the general municipal portion only, for 2021, if the full balance of property taxes is paid by June 30, 2021.

New projects in 2021 include construction of a cell phone tower in the hamlets of Marie Reine and St. Isidore to improve connectivity, installation of a shade shelter at Mamowintowin Hall in Cadotte Lake, paving of the walking trails and installation of a wheelchair accessible dock in Cecil Thompson Park as well as the rebuilding of some of the gravel roads within the County.

Other ongoing projects continuing in 2021 include drainage works within the County, additional day use sites and the construction of a washroom facility at Murphy’s Flats Day Use Area, maintenance of the oil stabilized gravel road network and the annual regravel program that will take place in the Marie Reine/Judah area.

The 2021 municipal budget projects revenues of $36,590,696, operating expenditures of $20,529,187 and capital acquisitions expenditures of $15,937,500. Council has motioned net transfers to reserved funds of $1,919,339 to balance the 2021 budget.
