August 26 Council Meeting Highlights

August 26, 2025, Council Meeting

News:

At the regular Council meeting held on August 26, 2025, Administration was directed to:

  •  Include provisions in the 2026 draft budget for a Misery Mountain Ski Hill Business Operations Manager.
  • Request a meeting with the Minister of Municipal Affairs and the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services to discuss the topic of policing costs and the increase in crime related to the agricultural and oil and gas sectors.
  • Request a meeting with the Minister of Primary and Preventable Health Services and the Minister of Environment and Protected Areas to follow up on items discussed at the Spring Rural Municipalities of Alberta Conference.
  • Provide a letter to the Premier regarding concerns about the Disaster Recovery Program payment process.
  • Provide a letter of Support for Peatland Research in Agricultural Landscapes.
  • Provide a letter of support for the ALUS Ecosystem Services Grant Program Application.
  • Provide a letter of congratulations to the Friends of the Shepherds Society for the completion of the Good Shepherd School Playground project.

 

Council authorized the signing of the Memorandum of Agreements with Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors regarding grant funding for partial cost recovery of the culvert replacement and improvement, as well as the grant funding for the slide remediation projects. 


Council has declared a Municipal Agricultural Disaster for livestock producers in Northern Sunrise County, and directed Administration to request that the federal and provincial governments add Northern Sunrise County to the prescribed regions for the 2025 Livestock Tax Deferral Provision.

Bylaws

  • Council gave second reading to Bylaw B458/24 Land Use Bylaw.
  • Council gave third reading and passed Bylaw B458/24 Land Use Bylaw as presented.
 
Policies:
  • Council approved amendments to Policy 1.34 Public Appointment to Boards and Committees as presented.
  • Council approved amendments to Policy 5.5 Compensation as presented.

 
Presentations:

  •  Victoria Stevens with Liveable Cities provided a presentation on Smart City Insights from Easily Deployed Sensors.

 
Donations and Sponsorships:

  • $3,000 to the Miserable Miles Event held at the Misery Mountain Ski Hill on September 6, 2025
  • $8,000 to the Mighty Peace Tourism Association for the Upper Peace Valley River Guide Expansion Project

  • September 9 and 23, 2025, regular Council Meetings at 9:30 a.m. in the Northern Sunrise County Council Chamber.
