How to Shelter-In-Place

Shelter-in-Place Instructions

In the event of a hazardous chemical release in your community, authorities may instruct you to "shelter-in-place." This means seeking immediate shelter where you are—whether at home, work, or school. In most cases, sheltering is required for only a few hours. Follow these steps:

  1. Go Inside: Close all windows and doors and stay on the ground level, avoiding the basement.

  2. Turn Off Ventilation: Turn off furnaces, air conditioners, and exhaust fans to prevent outside air from entering.

  3. Seal the Room: Choose an interior room and seal it with damp towels at the base of the door to block air flow.

  4. Stay Informed: Listen to local radio stations for further instructions and updates.

  5. Keep Phone Lines Free: Avoid using phone lines to ensure that emergency services can contact you if needed.
